The Sky Poem

by a.c.d

I looked at the sky for two minutes yesterday, thinking.

There was no window in the way to keep my thoughts from sinking

into how long it's been since I've stared at the sky, dreaming

with no windows to hide behind, the sun in my eye, freeing.

.

How often do you look at the sky?

It's always there but I never dared to try

to stare at it for long before it made me cry, blinking

tears mourning the last few years when the sun’s fire set me alight, linking

pain and sight in my mind,

locking heart and soul behind a window,

no desire to even try

to free my then-scorched guise.

.

I want to see the sky every day now.

Did I really not before? Or is this vow

a special kind of hope I've refused to have but always wanted more.

For two minutes yesterday, I learned a new way

for my heart and soul to see, so when the sun is bright the light

will only make me soar.

.

Yet I need to see the sky even when its dark and gray,

I know now that any sky is a sky worth feeling on my skin, so hear me say

that I was trapped but the sky is not,

I was stuck but then I fought

to see the sky every day, a sky I'll never turn away

again.
